Brian O' Callaghan

What year did you begin playing Ultimate Frisbee?

Sometime around 2003-2004

How did you start playing?

My older brother started playing in UCC the year before I went to college and so he got me throwing around with him so he could practice.

Who was your first frisbee crush?

Probably would have been Yvonne Halpin I suppose.

What was the best frisbee tournament you ever attended?

My first Windmill Windup way back in 2008, as it was my first international tournament and I got to play alongside Robin Giller and Brendan O'Callaghan and the rest of Ultimate deLux.

What was the worst frisbee tournament you ever attended?

It's tie between Beaches Be Crazy in 2012 (I think) as it was horribly windy and lashed rain 90% of time there. The other was Siege of Limerick in 2007/8 (not sure of the year), the tournament organisation for it was pathetic (nutrigrains anyone?) and it actually snowed Saturday afternoon during the girls last match.

If you were an animal that could play frisbee what animal would you like to be and why??

A honey badger, because that's what google told me on Earth Day yday

If a theme song was played every time you were announced onto the pitch, what theme song would you choose?

Ben Folds - One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces, because it was the last song I listened to.

What was your best Ultimate Frisbee moment?

Rebel Ultimate's fifth birthday, probably my proudest Ultimate moment.

Which player did you look up to when you first began playing frisbee?

Tadgh Healy, he was the benchmark for everyone in Irish Ultimate when it came to intense defense and athletic offense.

What player do you look up to at the moment?

Cian Ó'Móráin, he's the best Irish player to learn the trade here and has always been a few steps ahead of us all...suppose it helps when you play on the most successful European club team, CU.

Have you ever played a joke on one of your teammates?

Does being sarcastic and cynical count?

Where do you see your frisbee self in 5 years time -

If I'm still playing, it'll probably be on masters team somewhere

What was the best frisbee team you ever played on?

Success wise, Rebel Ultimate 2011 because we wont everything that year. Fun wise, probably Ultimate deLux at Windmill Windup 2008 or 2009.

Do you have any other hobbies?

I try my hand at pretty much any sport/activity until Renée starts beating me at it, then I give it up.

What was the best frisbee party you were ever at?

Sligo 2004, just great craic and them westerners knew how to throw a good party (and tournament). UCD Beginners 2004, there was "women lifting" and lamp climbing and water guns.

Have you ever thought about quitting frisbee?

Many times and have come close on more than one occasion. It's challenging to stay enthusiastic or simply interested year after year consistently, especially when you invest so much into players and they just disappear.

Why do you continue to play frisbee?

It's given me a great opportunity to meet people and to travel. Also at this stage, I've got so much Ultimate gear, it would be a waste to just dump it.

Choose your ideal frisbee player mush-up

Tadgh Healy's athletism, Cian Ó'Móráin's throws, Mark Fanning's footblock prowess, Luke Hyland's defense intensity, Dónal Murray's inspirational speech giving ability (https://youtu.be/t8gaqaanDSs), Oisin Flanagan's hands (their literally the diameter of a disc) and Robin Giller's reliability.

An interesting fact about you that people should know

Contrary to popular belief, I am not actually the oldest member of the club.

If you had to pick one person on your frisbee team to be stuck in a submarine with for 9 days who would you choose and why?

Female: Renée, because if I don't say it I'll get in trouble.
Male: Dónal, because I love arguing with him and doing my best to piss him off.

Do you have any nice saying - frisbee or just in general - you would like to share with us?

Own up to your mistakes and learn from them.

Do you ever wonder how different your life would be if frisbee didn't find you?

Nope, but now that you mention it, I suppose I wouldn't have several hundred frisbee's in my house....that would be nice.

Your dream job?

Stay at home boyfriend/dog walker
