Rebel ladies at the AIUC 2015

The weekend of the 31st/01st February 2015 saw the All Ireland Indoor Ultimate Championships take place in the University of Limerick. Rebel Ultimate sent three ladies teams.  With Rebel 1 narrowly missing out on the title last year, they were determined this year to go all the way.

Saturday

Rebel  1 (seeded 1st ) captained by Caroline and Mairead (v.c.)  began their battle for the championship title on court one against the pick-up team. Rebel 1 put on a very strong first performance winning the game. Final score 20-1.

Rebel 1 won their 2nd game against Gravity 2. Rosie doing some some crazy layouts. Final score 15-1.

Rebel  1 finished their day in U.L. playing against Jabba 2. It took a little while for the Rebel girls to find their groove in this match. Rebel had to switch their defense from a zone to an aggressive man to be in control of this game and by doing so managed to widen the score significantly. Final score 15-2.

Rebel 1 retained their seeding  securing 3 wins out of 3 on the first day of the championship. Nice work girls!

Rebel 2 (seeded 4th) captained by Edel and Kate (v.c) started their championship run on a high playing Queens. Rebel 2 put on a strong defense zone and along with some great scoobers from Kate and “throwing oneself on the ground grabs” from Karolina They were deserving winners. Final score 10-5

Rebel 2 won their second game against Snatch from Galway. The teams exchanged points for the first 6 points. But eventually Rebel 2 pulled away and started playing some great ultimate with the likes of  Emma throwing overheads like there was no tomorrow and fellow beginner Emma catching everything and anything thrown at her in the endzone. Memorable moment from this match was from Emma scoring a great point just before crashing into the wall. Well done Emma, we hope it was worth it!

Rebel 2 were unable to seal up their Saturday at the Championships with a winning streak. They played a tense game against Gravity 1 who were seeded 3rd just one spot ahead of our Rebel 2 girls. Although Gravity 1 were always in control of the game Rebel refused to give in and showed their fighting spirit. Edel threw some great deep throws to the endzone but unfortunately there was no Rebel hand to receive them. Rebel 2 must be praised for an almost unbreakable flood defense against their opponent.  Final score 4-9

Rebel 2 ladies winning 2 games out of 3 on the first day of the championship.

Rebel 3 (seeded 11th) captained by Renee and Carrie (v.c.) began their weekend, on court 3 against a very strong Jabba 1 (seeded 2nd). With some great grabs from Hannah and Orla, great cuts from Anna and sound handling from Val and Renee, Rebel 3 managed to score 3 points which was some achievement against the eventual winners . Final score 3-14

Rebel 3s second game was against Pelt (5th seeds). Rebel 3 fought really hard in this match and put on a great performance.  A memorable last point with Babs throwing a great hammer to Joanne in the endzone. Unfortunately they were unable to defeat a strong Pelt team . Final score 4-8

Rebel 3 next up  took on Jabba 3. Unfortunately they were chasing the game from the beginning but still they never gave up. Strong man defense from all the girls including Carrie and Sinead . Final score 9-4.

Rebel 3 took on Jabba 2 in the crossover match for their last game of the day. Rebel 3 really wanted to win this game. They managed to get the disc up the court numerous times but just failed to deliver in the endzone. Final score 5-9

Rebel 3 suffering 4 losses out of 4 on their first day on the first day of the championship.

All teams retained their seedings after the first day.

Sunday

Rebel 1 opened their Sunday with an easy win over Jabba 3. Maeve caught a great grab in the enzone and some great intercepting of dics from Michelle. Winning this game meant Rebel 1 secured their place in the  semi- final.  Final score 13 – 4

Rebel 2 took on Pelt for their first game on Sunday. Pelt were seeded 5th, one spot below Rebel 2. If Rebel 2 won this game they would face Rebel 1 in the semi-final. Kate and Hayley had some impressive dee’s in this game along with some great handling from Amy.  But Rebel 2 were unfortunate not to win this one.  Final score 5-8

Rebel 2s final two games were against Jabba 3 and Jabba 2. They won both games comfortably. Final scores 12 – 3 and 12-4.

Well done Rebel 2. I award you 5 stars out of 5 for your great play and fighting spirit!

Semi Final

Rebel 1 played Pelt in the semi-final. This was an intense game but the score line didn’t really show this. Although Rebel 1 were always ahead they lost their focus a little towards the end. It took almost 10 minutes for Rebel 1 to score the final point to wrap up the game. Rebel 1 marched on to the final later that day. Final score 14 – 2

The Final

At 4 o’ clock on Sunday afternoon Rebel 1 took on Jabba 1 in the final of the All Ireland Indoor Ultimate Frisbee Championships 2015. The two teams met only four months previously in the final of the outdoor Ultimate Frisbee Championship 2014. It was a really close game all the way through with both teams exchanging points all the way to the end. All players on Rebel 1 played exceedingly well. Some memorable moments include Rosie throwing a great deep throw to Caitlin in the endzone. Caitlin just about catching the disc before being knocked to the ground. Meara also threw some fabulous outside ins into the endzone and she had some great up the line cuts. The handlers Mary and Aoife had great patience on the disc against a strong zone defense from the Jabba girs. At 10 -10 the last point went to universe. Unfortunately Jabba 1 managed to score the final point.  Final score 10-11.

Great performance from you Rebel 1 girls. With an average height of about 5ft5” you managed to out skill and out perform some pretty big girls. You always played with great spirit and attitude. For this I award you 5 stars out of 5! Well done girls and I will no doubt see you back in the final for some sweet revenge in All Irelands later on in the year.
